There are a few key types of interpreting to understand. The National Centre for Languages, CILT, have a good explanation on their website, that you can read if you click here, as does the National Network for Interpreting, viewable if you click here. |
Interpreting in Financial and Legal Contexts
- Simultaneous interpreting
Most commonly at large conferences or meetings with headsets and microphones for participants, and interpreters sat in sound-proofed booths. This is the kind of interpreting they do at the United Nations. - Consecutive interpreting
Most commonly at smaller meetings or presentations, or in personal interpreting situations for a visiting dignitary, for example. - Chuchotage
Whispered interpreting. Most commonly used in courts, this is similar to simultaneous interpreting in that it occurs simultaneously, but similar to consecutive interpreting in that it is usually for the benefit of just one person.
