Technical Translation

Technical TranslationTechnical translations cover a wide range of disciplines ranging from owner’s manuals / user guides to IT documentation to patents.

Technical documents that we translate:

  • User, Installation and Maintenance manuals
  • Specification and Product Characteristics Sheets
  • Websites, and other digital content
  • Scientific Research and Journal Articles
  • Architectural and Engineering documents and plans
  • Documentation for Engineering Projects

Technical translating typically requires mastery not just of the appropriate terminology and the writing conventions, but also a high level of subject knowledge.

Many technical texts are written in a highly repetitive and formulaic way.  This implies that glossaries, terminology databases and translation memories are frequently very useful and often indispensible.

The role of the technical translator is demanding: in addition to being able to translate, the technical translator also needs to possess many of the skills of a technical writer and therefore must possess a broad skill set.

Example: Technical materials often contain valuable intellectual property

The security of the information must be protected not just technologically, but also by working with reliable trustworthy translators bound by confidentiality agreements.  Within the translation industry, there are examples where the translation process has led to information leaks.  One of the most notorious examples is when the entire operating system of a handheld device was sold and later published by a Chinese translator.

Errors in the handling of your translations can be costly.

Our Expertise

Our long standing expertise in technical translation stems from working with a database of technical translators who we know very well.  In addition, the way we handle technical translations is very process driven.  We have a formalised methodology to collect reference materials and develop our understanding of the specific task before selecting the appropriate translator and providing a full briefing.  Understanding the context at the outset is a critical step.We take on projects ranging in size from one off consumer electronic manuals to a three year project translating technical materials for the construction of a motorway in Canada.

Case Study

One of our longest ever running projects related to an infrastructure project in Canada (road building). The lead engineers wrote their plans and documentation in American. However, the implementation was carried out by a mixture of English and French speaking Canadians. We assembled an expert team of American to Canadian French engineering specialists. The work was sporadic with intense bursts over several weeks and then, from a translation perspective, not much activity for months while the construction was being done. But, we ensured that the each time the project moved to a new phase and translations were required, we had the same teams in place who were already briefed and up to speed.
